Monday - In preparation for the online research that we will be doing later this week, we will be discussing research skills and note taking. Students will practice paraphrasing information and picking out important details.

Tuesday - Today we will be discussing plagiarism and how to avoid it in research based writing. Students will do an in-class activity and take a quiz to test their understanding of what plagiarism is.

Monday - We are continuing on this week with Chapter 7: Ancient China. Students will start off with a quiz over Friday's vocabulary. We will then read section 4 (pages 200-205) as a class. Students will answer questions 1-3 (all) and have a vocab worksheet for homework.

Tuesday - Today students will take a quiz over yesterday's vocabulary. We will then read section 5 (pages 208-211) as a class. Students will answer questions 1-3 (all) and have a vocab worksheet for homework.

Wednesday - Students will have a quiz over yesterday's vocabulary. We will be reading from a packet in class (The Teachings of Laozi and Confucius) and then students will begin their chapter review in the textbook (pgs. 215-216, questions 1-15)

Thursday - We will do an in-class review game and students will have a chapter review worksheet to complete as homework.

Friday - Chapter 7 TEST.

Well, thanks to our winter wonderland out there, we are a few days behind schedule. We will be picking up today where we left off last week so some of this update may sound a bit redundant. 7LA:

Monday - Today we will move on from declarations to defending our positions with strong statements. Students will be given 'ridiculous' statements and will be challenged with creating statements to defend that position. All of this work is to prepare students for the persuasive writing assignment coming in the next few weeks.

Tuesday - Today we will begin the process of selecting and narrowing topics for our persuasive writing project. Students will select a topic from a topic list and begin developing a thesis statement. This work will drive the entire focus of their paper. We will discuss how to select a manageable topic and how the thesis statement will drive the content of their paper.

Wednesday - Today students will begin brainstorming for their persuasive writing. They will create a web of ideas that will help them create the framework of their papers.

Thursday - Today we will begin creating an outline (or skeleton) of the persuasive paper. Students will generate a list of research questions that will guide their research next week.

Friday - We will continue on with our MSP practice today and look at a reading selection and a piece of grammar review (concrete and abstract nouns).

Thursday - We will start off today with a quiz over Section 1. Students will read Section 2 on pages 188-193 and answer questions 1-3 (all) on page 193. Students will also have a vocabulary worksheet for homework. There will be a quiz tomorrow over Section 2.

Sorry this is a day late; I've been busy prepping for conferences and didn't get the update written before I left yesterday. With the winter weather we're having today, I'm not sure if conferences will be held tonight or not - the district is going to make that decision later on. I will try to post on Facebook and on the website as soon as I hear something. If conferences are canceled tonight we will make them up on a different day.

Tuesday - We will be continuing our discussion on propaganda today and looking at how new forms of propaganda emerged with the introduction of the television into American households in the 1950's. Students will also look at protest art and answer some questions in class about a variety of poems, political cartoons, and songs.

Happy Monday!! Here is the update for this week...

7LA:

This week Language Arts class will be focusing on persuasive writing. We will spend some time looking at persuasive techniques and writing examples before students move on to practicing their own persuasive writing toward the end of the month. This is one of the forms of writing that is assessed on the MSP so we will spend quite a bit of time discussing it and practicing. Students will have a worksheet each day that covers the component discussed in class and will have a short writing activity for homework. I will try to give as much time as possible each day for students to work on this writing but I do expect many of them to have homework this week.

Monday - We will discuss point of view and how it can change the message of a piece of writing. For homework tonight, students need to write a brief retelling of a familiar fairy tale from a point of view that is different from the original.

Tuesday - Today we will discuss fact and opinion statements. Students will have 26 statements on their worksheet and will need to determine whether each is a fact or opinion.

Wednesday - We will spend today discussing propaganda and looking at some of the most common techniques used in advertising today. For homework, students will need to find an example of one of these
techniques as it is used in a print, online, or television advertisement. They will need to explain the ad, tell what technique is used, and decide if they believe it was effective or not.

Thursday - Today we will look specifically at war propaganda and discuss how war posters sent messages to the US public during WWII.

Friday - We will be working on MSP reading skills today. Students will have a packet in class (Centralia) and a vocabulary packet. We will complete the MSP packet in class and students will start the vocab during class but may have homework over the weekend.

Welcome back!! I hope you all had a wonderful and restful holiday season and are ready to dive in to 2012. So far I've said the date incorrectly three times today and it's only 9am. This could take some getting used to... We are jumping right back in to our work in school so please watch for homework at home this week and be checking planners - I have a hunch many of my students are in a bit of shock coming back and might need a little bit of motivation to get them through the week.

7LA:

Tuesday - We will be working on recognizing cause and effect this week. Students have a packet today that we started in class but needs to be finished as homework. They have several short passages to read in a packet and multiple choice questions to answer. This packet is due tomorrow.

Wednesday - We will continue working on cause and effect and will start a new packet that we will work on for the next two days. We will preview the reading selection, work on vocabulary, and read the first section of the story today. Students may have vocab homework if they did not finish in class.

Thursday - We will continue our packet today and will finish the second half of the story as well as the comprehension quiz at the end. If time allows, we will correct in class.

Our last week in December, wahoo!! I'm sorry that I didn't an update last week - I was buried in grading and by the time I realized that I had forgotten it was half-way through the week! On weeks like that, please refer to your child's planner for assignments as they are supposed to fill them in each day at the start of class.

7LA:

Monday - Thursday - Students will be working on a Poetry Booklet this week. They will be responsible for selecting 15 poems and writing explanations about what the poem meant and why they selected it. We will be working in the computer lab on this for four days so students should have plenty of time to finish in class. The project will be due Friday at the start of class.

Friday - After turning in the Poetry Booklets, students will will take a test over the poetry vocabulary we covered last week. Each students will be allowed one half sheet of paper for notes if they choose to take advantage of it.

8LA:

Monday - Thursday - Students will be working on a Poetry Project this week. They will be responsible for selecting a poem and writing an analysis of their poem, showing examples of different poetic devices used in their poem, and displaying this information on a poster. We will be working in the computer lab on this for four days so students should have plenty of time to finish in class. The project will be due Friday at the start of class.

Friday - After turning in the Poetry Projects, students will will take a test over the poetry vocabulary we covered last week. Each students will be allowed one half sheet of paper for notes if they choose to take advantage of it.

Monday - Tuesday - Students will work on creating an Egyptian Cartouche' in class.

Wednesday - Thursday - We will be working with some websites discussing ancient Egypt and completing two online activites.

Welcome back!! I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving break and got to spend time with family. We are diving back in and will be working hard for the next three weeks. December is a short month but we manage to fit A LOT in. Second semester starts today so all student have a clean slate with grades in all classes. Students also begin their new elective classes today.

7LA:

This week we will be working on understanding sequence and using sequence to aid in reading comprehension. Students will have a packet on Tuesday that was started in class; any remaining questions will be homework. Wednesday and Thursday we will be working on a more in depth packet as a class but some portions (vocab and the quiz at the end) will be assigned for homework on those nights.

On Friday students will take a unit assessment over the first three reading strategies - Finding Main Idea, Recalling Facts and Details, and Understanding Sequence.

Our last full week in November is already upon us and I have officially started my countdown to a turkey induced coma next week. This is a busy week in class as students prepare for their first student led conference (with me) but they will not have homework. Language Arts students have a major book report due this Friday and I wanted to make sure they had their evenings free (from my class at least) to work on their reports.

7LA:

This week students will prepare their best works portfolios for student led conferences. They will select three assignments they believe represent their best works, will write reflections about what they did well on and how they could have improved, and will set goals for improvement for next semester. Once this process is complete they will present their portfolios to me and share their goals and best work.

Monday - We will be starting our work with descriptive writing today. Students will view a sideshow and will create a 'word bank' of adjectives that will be used in a brief writing assignment next week.

Tuesday - Students will practice writing a short paragraph using descriptive words.

Wednesday - Students will take a short walk around the school and make notes of what they see, hear, smell, and feel. We will work on writing a descriptive paragraph with the information they recorded.

Thursday - We will begin our 'Things I'm Thankful For' writing assignment. Students will select a topic and write a descriptive paragraph that explains what they are thankful for and why. Today students will be selecting topics, brainstorming, and prewriting.

Friday - Students will edit their rough drafts and begin writing their final drafts in class today.

8th LA:

Monday - Friday - We will be reading the novel, The Outsiders, in class. Students will complete their reading at school and have a journal entry and a quiz every two chapters (every two days).

Tuff Collage - Students will be working on a 'Tuff' collage at home this week. In our novel, 'tuff' means 'cool'. Students will make a 12x18 collage of things that are 'tuff' or cool to them. These are due in class on Friday.

7th SS:

Monday - Today we will be taking a quiz over Section 2 and previewing Section 3. Students will have a vocab worksheet for homework.

Tuesday - We will be reading pages 67-71 in class and working on questions 1-3 (all parts).

Wednesday - We will be taking a quiz over Section 3 and previewing Section 4. Students will have a vocab worksheet for homework.

Wow! This is a super short week AND the final few days of October... Scheduled conferences are THIS Thursday from 8am-4pm. Most slots are filled but if you need to schedule a conference with your child's teachers, please contact the office right away. 7th LA:

Monday - Wednesday: Last week we started pre-writing for our Character Sketch of Freak the Mighty. This week, students will complete their 4-Square (Monday) and complete a rough draft of their paper (Tuesday.) On Wednesday, students will meet with a partner to edit and revise their work. I highly encourage students to share their work with someone at home as well. Their homework over the long weekend will be to create their final draft. All final drafts must be hand-written, double spaced, in blue or black ink, and written only on one side of the paper. These final drafts will be due in class on Monday.

8th LA:

Monday - Wednesday: Students will be practicing the reading strategy of Finding Main Idea this week. We will do two packets in class and spend time discussing the use of a graphic organizer when identifying the theme of a selection. Students will have some homework each night, depending on how much of the packet they completed in class.

7th SS:

Monday - We will be reading pages 56-59 and answering questions 1-3 (all parts). Students must also fill out the 'My Social Studies Textbook Page' handout. This handout will be used to help them study for the chapter test.

Tuesday - Students will take a short quiz over Chapter 3, Section 1. We will preview Section 2 as a class and students will work on a packet covering some of the achievements of early Mesopotamians.

Wednesday - We will cover Section 2 today, reading pages 60-61 and 62-66 in our textbook and answering questions 1-3. Students will have a packet for homework over the long weekend covering the Sumerians. This packet is due on Monday.

Here we are, in the third week of October... I'm loving the cold mornings and the rainy nights. If I could keep fall around year-long, I would absolutely do it!

7LA:

Monday - We will read the final three chapters in our novel, Freak the Mighty, in class.

I will be assigning the fall semester book report. Information for the book report can be found here.This project is due on Friday, November 18th in class. Late work is not accepted so please remind your students to manage their time wisely. Thursday - Today we will do a character web to help students understand how all of the characters in the story are interrelated. This activity will help them with character relationships in the Character Sketch that we will be writing next week.

Friday - Today we will be reviewing the 4-Square pre-writing model. Students will be expected to use this pre-writing format in their Character Sketch next week.

8LA:

Somehow we are already in the middle of October - fall sports are winding down, mid-term grades have been posted, and the weather is finally cooling down... Before we know it we'll be staring Thanksgiving Break in the face!! We have a short week this week, there is no school on Friday for a State In-Service Day.

7LA:

Monday - Thursday - We will be continuing our novel, Freak the Mighty, this week. My intention is to have students finish early next week so we can move on to our writing assignment and project that go along with the novel. Each day students read three chapters in class and answer comprehension questions on their own. I have been posting the comprehension questions on the Facebook page so if students do not finish in class they can assess them there.

8LA:

Monday - We are finishing up our online research for news articles today in the lab.

Tuesday - We will discuss the prewriting stage of our projects and begin planning the first draft of our news articles.

Wednesday & Thursday - We will be handwriting the first draft of our papers in class. Students will conference with me as they complete their first draft to prepare for the next stage of the writing process.

7SS:

Monday & Tuesday - We will be reading some excerpts about the importance of cave drawings and early artwork. Students will read the selection in class and complete a worksheet each day to test their understanding.

Wednesday & Thursday - We will spend two days in the computer lab researching an archeological site called Catalhoyuk. Students will explore this website to learn about the artifacts found at the site and to complete a study guide.

Wow, how are we already in the last week of September? I am thankful that fall finally decided to show up as I have a very low tolerance for the crazy heat on this side of the mountains. I won't lie - I did a little dance this morning when I saw the rain and clouds - this is my favorite season.

7LA:

Tuesday - We will be discussing the literary element of character today in order to help students understand the different aspects that combine to create a character. We will do the majority of the work in class but students do need to complete one page (Character Body Language) at home. We will discuss the final page at the start of class tomorrow.

Wednesday & Thursday - We will be spending some time preparing for our first class novel, Freak the Mighty by starting a WebQuest. Students will view the WebQuest at http://freakthemightywebquest.wikispaces.com/ and complete sections 1, 2, and 3. This information will help set the stage for the learning that will occur in the novel and help students build background knowledge about some of the issues faced by our characters.

Friday - We will begin the novel in class today and read the first 3 to 4 chapters, depending on time. Students will do their reading for this novel in class, I do not send books home unless a student has been absent or has made prior arrangements.

8LA:

Tuesday - Friday - We will spend each day this week doing a variety of writing activities to help students develop ideas for their writing. This activities come from the 6+1 Traits of Writing for Middle School and will be used to improve student writing throughout the year. This work will set the stage for the first major writing project, to be assigned in the next two weeks.

7SS:

Tuesday - We will complete the 'Neanderthal' video that we started last week. Students will then read a selection about prehistory and prehistoric technology and answer comprehension questions. This work should be finished in class.

Wednesday - We will begin Chapter 2, Section 2 by previewing the text and discussing the vocabulary words and central issues. Students will have a vocabulary worksheet to complete in class.

Thursday - We will read pages 36-39 in our textbook aloud and students will answer questions 1-3 (all parts).

Friday - We will take the Chapter 2, Section 2 quiz as well as a continents and oceans test. Once students have completed their quizzes, we will preview Chapter 2, Section 3 and discuss the new vocabulary for that section.

Zillah School District Saves Taxpayer’s Money

· District takes advantage of historically low interest rates.

· $229,000 in taxpayer savings over 12 year life of bond issue.

Zillah, WA – On September 15, 2011, Zillah School District took advantage of historically low interest rates in the municipal bond market and completed the refinancing of its 2003 voter approved bonds. These original bonds provided for: the modernization of Hilton Elementary and Zillah High Schools and construct and equip a new multi-purpose facility at Zillah Middle School.

The refinancing will reduce debt repayment costs by $229,000 over the remaining 12 year life of the bonds. Working with Martin Nelson and Company of Seattle, the District was able to replace the 4.52% interest rate currently paid on its outstanding 2003 debt with a new rate of 2.29%. This 2.23% rate reduction classified the refinancing at two full percentage points above the superior level of standard industry benchmarks for quality.

In addition to the low interest rate, the District received an inaugural bond rating of “A+’’ from Standard & Poor’s, the highest grade in the “A” category. This rating was based on the District’s manageable debt level, reasonable general fund reserves, established fiscal policies, positive and healthy community relationship and superior management.

Well, we finally made it through the awful baseline assessments (and I'm sure students are going to be THRILLED to hear that!) and can get started on new learning and projects in the next few weeks.

7th Grade LA:

Monday - Wednesday - We will be discussing our first reading strategy this week, Finding Main Idea. Students will complete two packets for this strategy, one in class on Monday and one will be split between Tuesday and Wednesday. Students will only have homework on these days if they do not finish their work in class.

Thursday & Friday - We will end the week looking at the literary elements of 'character'. This work will help set the stage for our first novel (which we will begin in the next week or so) and our first book report (to be assigned the second half of the semester). Students will be looking at different personality traits of characters and discussing how those traits shape their opinion of each character.

8th Grade LA:

Monday - Thursday - This week we will begin looking at the 6+1 Traits of Writing and focusing specifically on the 'conventions' trait. Each day students will have a variety of editing tasks to help them understand the importance of checking their conventions in a final draft.

Friday - We will continue working with the 6+1 Traits and begin looking at the 'ideas' trait. These two topics will be the focus for our first major writing project, which will be assigned in a few weeks. Students will not have homework this week.

7th Grade SS:

Friday - Students will take their test over Chapter 1 today. If time allows, we will correct and discuss in class.

Happy Monday!! I hope you all had a restful weekend as we head into the first full week of school. This week will be spent getting students familiar with myself and each other.

Students will have a handout that explains what topics they need to cover in each paragraph. Wednesday - Today we will discuss map reading skills and create a oceans and continents study guide for future tests. We will also begin discussing the routes ancient peoples used when traveling and settling around the world.

Thursday - Today we will begin our work in the textbook. Students will read pages 4-6 and answer questions 1-3 (all parts) about maps of the ancient world. Students will then read pages 6-11 and answer questions 1-3 (all parts).

Friday - We will start the day with a vocabulary worksheet to review from yesterday's reading section. Students will then read pages 12-17 and answer questions 1-3 (all parts).

Students will take surveys, play a couple games, have a quiz on the information in the syllabus, and have their first planner check. Here we go...

Well, here we are... twelve hours away from the start of the new school year. I don't know about all of you, but the summer just flew by for me. It seems like the time between August 1st and today was almost nonexistent but I am really excited to start off the year and get back into the swing of things. I spent my summer driving back and forth between home and Seattle to visit my father who spent several weeks in the hospital with complications due to cancer. He is out now and on our last trip over, my daughter and I spent the weekend with my parents at the beach and took a trip to the zoo. It was definitely one highlight of my summer. The other highlight of this summer was the completion of my Master's degree. I have been working for the past year and a half and getting that degree in the mail was the most satisfying feeling after all the long hours and hard work.

I have been fortunate enough this year to have two new employment opportunities - in addition to Language Arts, I will be teaching 7th grade Social Studies, which is something I have always wanted to do. I originally wanted to be a History major in college but didn't know what I would do with such a degree, but all of those classes will come in handy in the months ahead. I'm looking forward to learning along with the students and getting the opportunity to try something new in my job. In addition to teaching, I will also be coaching volleyball at the middle school. I coached a few years ago but took two years off after I had my daughter. I'm thrilled to be back in the athletics department and anxious to get started. Being around the students outside the classroom is such a rewarding experience.

If you are new to this blog, I will post weekly updates (usually on Monday by noon) for each class. I will briefly discuss the concepts being covered in class, the projects or assignments that students will be working on, and upcoming test dates and due dates. I am also working to complete the tabs at the top of this blog (7th Grade LA, 8th Grade LA, Social Studies, etc.) with links to downloadable files. These files will contain assignment guidelines, rubrics, worksheets, study guides, etc. and can be printed by students at home. If you ever have trouble accessing a portion of the site, please let me know so I can work on getting it fixed right away.

8th Grade Bullying Skits

After working for almost two months on our bullying in literature unit, the 8th graders put the finishing touches on their wiki page book reports and their bullying skits. I'm so proud of all the creativity and hard work that went into this and I think the kids are just as excited as I am to show it all off!
